What is Inter Ocean?

The Inter Ocean is a place, a feeling, and a promise. The land between seas exists in my mind as the place of mountains rising out of an ocean of sagebrush. While ever elusive I know its heart while the boundaries ebb and flow. A compelling geography, both subtle and dramatic I find meaning and seek something that I lost long ago. It is a land of promise, of hope, of unmatched beauty, and challenge. And something more. Something that pulls me like geese in the spring.

Briant Wiles grew up in Wyoming and spent much of his formative years chasing trout, fowl, deer, and elk while learning the trades of a working ranch. Before the snow became his overriding obsession, he worked summers monitoring vegetation transects and putting up range fencing across the region. In typical young male fashion he moved to the mountains of Colorado and worked in the ski industry for over a decade. All his energy and free time being devoted to snow. His season would start in September and not stop until the end of July year after year. Snowboarding took him all over the west and around the world as he explored ever more remote ranges. He holds three avalanche certifications from the American Institute of Avalanche Research and Education. From mountaineering trips to Ecuador, navigating complex terrain on his splitboard in Alaska he is always home on snow. In his career he has worked as a mechanized ski guide and backcountry ski guide for research institutions. He has held Wilderness First Responder and EMT certifications in the State of Colorado. After years spent chasing snow his passion around the west and land management led him back to school where he earned a Master of Environmental Management. Since this pivot point, he has worked for many years in the field of ranch management, conducting vegetation research and research on wild trout populations. He has spent much of his time in the non-profit space working for organizations like Trout Unlimited, and Backcountry Hunters and Anglers. In recent years he has worked with federal and state land management agencies to identify and remove unwanted fencing on public lands that fragments habitat and poses a threat to wildlife. Through all of this wandering the place has remained consistent. The inter mountain west that stretches the length of the Rocky Mountains has always captured his imagination. After decades spent absorbing the good times and grand views he is sharing his vision with the world. Photography has been there in the background on every hunting trip and backcountry mission. Now Briant is sharing his unique perspective through the lens with the world. Briant currently resides in Gunnison, CO and can be found outside no matter the season. Whether it is climbing a mountain, casting a fly, or bugling for elk. He is always at home in the Inter Ocean.
